The First 3 Visits: How to Go from Stranger to Regular
Written by: Tino Noir
Regulars aren't born. They're built — visit by visit. Here's exactly what to do in each of the first three.
Most people wait to feel like a regular before they act like one. That's backwards.
Regulars are made in the first three visits. Not through charm or luck — through small, deliberate choices that compound. Here's what those choices look like.
VISIT ONE — OBSERVE
Your only job on the first visit is to pay attention.
Where do the regulars sit? What does the bartender respond to? What's the energy at different times of day? What's on the menu that nobody orders but probably should be?
Don't try to become known yet. Just become informed. Learn the room before you try to own it.
Order something off the menu — not the obvious thing. Ask one question you actually want the answer to. Tip well. Leave before you've overstayed.
Before you go to sleep that night, write down three things: the bartender's name, one detail about them, and what you ordered. That's it.
VISIT TWO — CONNECT
Come back within the week if you can. Within two weeks at the most.
Use the name you wrote down. Reference something from the first visit if you can — not in a weird way, just naturally. "That thing you recommended last time was great." It shows you were listening. People remember being listened to.
This is the visit where you establish your usual. Not forever — just for now. Pick something and stick with it. Give them something to greet you with next time.
Ask one question that has a real answer. Something that continues next visit.
VISIT THREE — ARRIVE
By the third visit, something shifts.
If you've done the first two right — sat at the bar, learned a name, tipped well, ordered consistently, asked one real question — you will be recognized. Not famous. Just known. Which is all a regular ever is.
They'll remember your drink before you order it, or almost. They'll ask about the thing you mentioned last time. The interaction will feel different — warmer, easier, less transactional.
That's the moment. You didn't wait for it. You built it.
WHY THREE VISITS
Three visits is enough time to establish a pattern without requiring a long-term commitment. It's also the threshold at which most staff go from "I've seen them before" to "I know them."
One visit is a customer. Two visits is a coincidence. Three visits is a regular in progress.
After three you just have to keep showing up — and keep paying attention. The rest takes care of itself.
That's what TAOBAR is for. After visit one, log the name and the detail. After visit two, update what you ordered. By visit three, you open the app before you walk in and everything you've built is right there waiting. The memory doesn't have to live in your head. It just has to exist somewhere.
