How to Become a Regular at a Bar
Written by: Tino Noir
Becoming a regular isn't about drinking more. It's about showing up right. Here's exactly how it works.
A regular isn't someone who drinks a lot at one place. A regular is someone the bar is glad to see.
That's a different thing entirely — and it's learnable.
SIT AT THE BAR
This is the single most important decision you'll make. Tables are for groups and strangers. The bar is where regulars live.
When you sit at the bar you're in the bartender's world. You can talk without shouting. You can make eye contact. You can become a person instead of a table number. Everything else builds from here.
HAVE A USUAL
You don't need to know exactly what you want the first time. But by the third visit you should have something. A drink, a dish, a preference.
When you order the same thing consistently it signals to the staff that you know the place. That you've thought about it. That you're not just passing through. It also gives them something to remember you by — and giving people something to remember you by is the whole game.
LEARN THEIR NAME FIRST
Not after they learn yours. First.
Read the name tag if there is one. Listen when they introduce themselves. Ask directly if you have to — "I didn't catch your name." Then use it. Not every sentence, just enough to show it landed.
This is the thing most people don't do. And it's the thing that separates a customer from a regular faster than anything else.
TIP LIKE YOU'RE COMING BACK
Because you are.
A good tip isn't just generosity — it's a signal. It says you understand how this works, you value the experience, and you intend to return. Bartenders remember. Not just who tips well, but who tips well and comes back. That combination is what gets you the better pour, the extra attention, the occasional comp.
Twenty percent is the floor. Round up when you can.
SHOW UP CONSISTENTLY
Once a week is enough to become a regular at most places. Once every two weeks if you're intentional about it.
Consistency matters more than frequency. A person who comes in every Thursday at 7pm becomes a fixture faster than someone who comes five times in one month and then disappears. The staff starts to anticipate you. That's when you know it's working.
REMEMBER SOMETHING ABOUT THEM
Ask one real question per visit. Not small talk — something with an answer worth remembering.
Then remember the answer. Bring it up next time. "How did that thing with your sister work out?" "Did you end up going to that show?"
This is the move almost nobody makes. And it's the one that turns a bartender into someone who's genuinely glad you walked in.
TAOBAR was built for exactly this. Save the bar, add the bartender's name and what you talked about, set your usual. Next time you walk in, it's all right there — before you even reach the door. The work is done. All you have to do is show up.
